Human Resources
The Lawrence Public School District is a suburban, Pre-Kindergarten to 12 school system that employs hundreds of teachers, administrators and support staff and provides services to nearly 3,100 public school students. Since quality teachers are the single greatest factor in improving teaching and learning in classrooms and strong leaders are the foundation for all high-performing schools, the Human Resources Office is committed to securing the services of outstanding individuals in all areas of district operations.
As the District works to hire, develop, and retain a highly qualified staff, the goal of the Human Resources Office is to provide excellent service and to build a team of professionals who are passionate about the success of all students, and who are willing to dedicate the necessary time and resources to meet the diverse needs of the Lawrence Public Schools. We work hard to recruit and select the most qualified and outstanding candidates to join our team of dedicated professionals.

Summer Employment
Certified positions include all positions that require certification by the New York State Department of Education. This category includes administrative positions, teaching positions, counselors, psychologists, etc. Substitutes and summer teachers are included in certified positions. All applicants must possess a valid certificate commensurate with the position sought in order to be considered.
Classified positions include all clerical, teacher aides, maintenance, custodial, and transportation positions, etc. These are Civil Service positions and are governed by Nassau County Civil Service Law and procedures. Competitive positions require one year of Nassau County residency and they may include a competitive test. All positions require Nassau County Civil Service approval.
Recent legislation has been passed, effective July 1, 2001 , which requires all prospective school district employees to be fingerprinted for a criminal history background check in order to be cleared for employment at a school or for certification. Applicants who have been recommended for a position with the Lawrence School District will be assisted with the fingerprint process. The New York State fee for the fingerprints is $94.25, plus a $25.00 processing fee for the administering of the fingerprints.
The Human Resources Office works with the New York State Education Department - Office of Teaching Initiatives and the Nassau County Civil Service Department to help insure the district complies with all federal, state and local laws and regulations.
Academics
Curriculum News
New York State has adopted the national standards for education called the "core curriculum" for grades K through 12. These new standards bring change to the state assessments and have prompted a shift in the way students and teachers prepare for the tests.
On this page you will find information that will help you better understand the core curriculum as you support your child's education.
Working together, schools and families can help our students be successful in the classroom.
EngageNY is a great online source for information about the common core. It has guides, videos and other types of information for parents, families and teachers.
Click here for the EngageNY website.
To learn more about the common core standard "shifts," click on the link to the following document:"Common Core State Standards: Shifts for Students and Parents"
Look to your child's backpack as an indicator of what they are working on in school, and the way their class work and homework now reflect the shifts. Click here for a Common Core Backpack Guide.
This website is designed to give you direct access to the Federal Government's policies under "No Child Left Behind", the New York State Education Department's informational website and links to the Lawrence Public School District's instructional program. We offer this resource in the hope that you will become familiar with the mandates and requirements that drive instruction in our district. Our staff has worked diligently to organize and publish curriculum and topical maps for your information. As you will notice, we offer a rich and well-articulated curriculum.
Curriculum maps are used as planning devices for our teachers. While the scope of any given curriculum map is universal, the sequence is discretionary. Teachers determine when topics are presented, based on local and world events, student needs and prior knowledge. Since prior knowledge plays a vital role in developing deep meaning, we ask that you use the maps as a guide when planning family activities, outings and vacations. We recognize the importance of the home-school connection and cherish that partnership.
