LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (OCTOBER 2023)—Lawrence Middle School recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated from September 15 – October 15 this year. The month-long celebration is a time dedicated to honoring the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. Throughout this 30-day period,  activities in the school have been planned to educate and inspire students about Hispanic heritage.

“We believe it is crucial to celebrate and honor the diverse cultures within our school community,” said Willis Perry, Principal of Lawrence Middle School. “Hispanic Heritage Month allows us to educate our students about the rich history, traditions, and contributions of the Hispanic communities. By embracing and appreciating different cultures, we foster an inclusive and respectful environment for all.”

During the first week of Hispanic Heritage Month, Lawrence Middle School students showcased their multilanguage abilities by reciting poems from Hispanic poets over the PA system. This initiative aimed to highlight the beauty of Hispanic literature while encouraging students to explore different forms of artistic expression. Students also recited the Pledge of Allegiance in both English and Spanish.

In the second week, the middle school students incorporated music into the celebration by playing popular Hispanic songs from various genres during class transitions. The third week of Hispanic Heritage Month brought a delicious twist to the festival as middle school students were invited to their Social Emotional Learning (SEL) room during lunch to try some Hispanic dishes. The final week of Hispanic Heritage Month – the week of October 9 – will bring additional activities devoted to the month-long celebration.
