LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (APRIL 2024)—Lawrence prekindergarten students participated in the Week of the Young Child, a celebration hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children aimed at highlighting the importance of early childhood education and the needs of young children and their families.

Prekindergarten Director Patricia Almonaitis expressed her enthusiasm for the week’s activities: "The Week of the Young Child provided our students with enriching experiences that fostered creativity, collaboration, and healthy habits. We are grateful to all who contributed to making this week a memorable and impactful one for our young learners.”

The week kicked off with Music Monday, during which students from Lawrence Middle School treated young learners to a special performance. The middle schoolers sang songs from their show, Shrek, Jr., inspiring and entertaining the prekindergarten students. Additionally, the young learners engaged in music-making activities of their own, crafting instruments and exploring different sounds in their classrooms.

On Tasty Tuesday, the focus shifted to healthy eating habits, as the children got creative with vegetables provided by Food Services. Using carrots, cucumbers, and celery,  students crafted cheerful faces, promoting nutritious food choices in a fun and interactive way.

Work Together Wednesday encouraged collaboration and teamwork as students engaged in parachute games. Together, they made a parachute billow up and down while working together to prevent balls from flying off. Laughter and camaraderie filled the air and young children embraced the spirit of cooperation. Artsy Thursday brought out the budding artists in the prekindergarten class as they explored unconventional painting methods. Instead of traditional paintbrushes, the students experimented with sponges, rubber balls, forks, and bottle caps to create unique works of art, fostering creativity and imagination.

The week concluded on a heartwarming note with Family Friday, where families were invited to join in the festivities and participate in various center activities alongside their children. It was a wonderful opportunity for families to connect, bond, and celebrate the achievements of their young learners, marking a perfect end to the Week of the Young Child.
