LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 2024)—A group of eager and curious students from Lawrence High School recently embarked on an exciting field trip to the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, bringing classroom lessons to life in a hands-on, real-world experience.
The trip allowed the students to explore the wonders of marine life while engaging with a variety of interactive exhibits and activities. Highlights of the trip included visits to the aquarium’s iconic “Ocean Wonders: Sharks! exhibit, where students observed a diverse array of sharks, rays, and other sea creatures, as well as the touch pools, where they interacted with starfish, sea urchins, and other marine life
The educational experience was designed not only to inspire students’ curiosity about marine biology but also to instill a greater appreciation for the importance of preserving the world’s oceans and the species that inhabit them. As part of their visit, students had the opportunity to attend a guided tour led by the aquarium’s expert educators, who shared insights on marine life, environmental threats, and the conservation efforts underway to protect vulnerable ocean species.
“This field trip was an invaluable experience for our students,” said David Ziff, Lawrence High School teacher. “The New York Aquarium offers a unique opportunity to learn outside the classroom and engage with the natural world. It’s one thing to read about marine animals in textbooks, but seeing them in their natural habitats truly brings those lessons to life.”
In addition to the educational components, students were encouraged to reflect on their experiences and share what they had learned with their peers through group discussions and creative projects. The trip was a wonderful way for students to connect with nature, understand the importance of conservation, and strengthen their sense of environmental responsibility.
Lawrence High School would like to thank the New York Aquarium for providing an enriching and unforgettable experience for students. We look forward to more opportunities that enhance education and foster a love for learning and discovery!
