LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 2024)—Lawrence High School students participated in an immersive educational experience that took them beyond the pages of their history textbooks and connected them with the real-life stories of Holocaust survivors. Attending the Portraits of Survivors exhibit at the Peninsula Public Library, students walked through a moving visual collection of Holocaust survivor testimonies, deepening their understanding of this tragic chapter in history while gaining valuable lessons in human rights, tolerance, and empathy.
The exhibit features powerful portraits and personal stories of survivors, offering a unique, firsthand perspective on the horrors of the Holocaust and the strength of those who lived through it. As part of the experience, students heard from Janet Games, Lawrence High School art teacher, and Asher Matathias, a respected local community member, both of whom shared their connections to Holocaust history.
The event was designed to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of memory, resilience, and human rights. By listening to personal accounts from survivors and their families, the students experienced a connection to the Holocaust that transcended the typical classroom environment. This experience encouraged them to think critically about the role of individual responsibility in fighting prejudice and promoting tolerance in today's world.
This experience highlights Lawrence High School's commitment to offering students opportunities for meaningful, real-world learning that goes beyond the confines of the classroom. It also underscores the importance of storytelling in preserving history and teaching the values of empathy, respect, and resilience. Through these powerful encounters, students are encouraged to take what they've learned and apply it in their own lives, becoming ambassadors for human rights and defenders of dignity and tolerance.
By attending this exhibit and engaging with survivor stories, Lawrence High School students not only strengthened their understanding of history but also deepened their connection to the ongoing fight for human rights and justice across the world.
