LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (DECEMBER 2024)—Lawrence High School’s Student Government recently participated in a highly informative and inspiring Leadership Conference, joining 12 other schools to discuss the future of leadership, government, and current school issues. The event, which featured a keynote address by Nassau County Controller Elaine Phillips, provided students with valuable insights on how they can make a meaningful difference in both their schools and communities.
Elaine Phillips, a respected leader in local government, delivered an empowering speech on the importance of civic engagement and the qualities required to bring about positive change. Her talk focused on the actions and responsibilities needed to influence policy and make a lasting impact in the field of government.
“The conference was a great opportunity for our students to gain new perspectives and deepen their understanding of leadership,” said adviser Hugh Walker. “It was inspiring to see the level of passion and engagement from all the students who attended.”
In addition to the keynote address, the conference also featured breakout group discussions, where students from various schools came together to discuss pressing issues facing their schools and communities. These sessions encouraged students to share ideas, engage in problem-solving, and collaborate on potential solutions to current challenges.
The Lawrence High School Student Government, accompanied by advisers Hugh Walker, Rikki Eisner, and David Ziff, gained invaluable experience and skills to bring back to their school and put into action. The advisers guided students in fostering leadership qualities and discussing how they can collaborate to advocate for change within the school and the broader community. This leadership conference was a tremendous success, providing students with the tools and motivation to continue advocating for change at Lawrence High School and beyond.
