LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (DECEMBER 2024)—The Lawrence Middle School Service Learning Club and Peer Advisory Club, under the leadership of Maria Karvelas and Kristin Polumbo, are thrilled to announce their successful collection of essential items for the nonprofit organization Nassau County Firefighters’ Operation Wounded Warrior. This organization provides much-needed assistance to service members who have been wounded in the line of duty.

The two student clubs came together to gather toiletries for both men and women, which will be used to assemble hygiene kits for the brave service members. The collected items will be delivered to Ft. Belvoir Base in Virginia on December 13, 2024, as part of the organization's ongoing efforts to support our veterans.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for their dedication to this cause,” said Maria Karvelas, advisor to the Service Learning Club. “By working alongside the Peer Advisory Club, they are not only helping those in need but also learning the importance of empathy, responsibility, and character. The Service Learning Club, together with the Peer Advisory Club, creates an environment that teaches our students to be RICH in character, brick by brick.”

Ms. Donnelly, a gracious volunteer, has kindly offered to transport the donated items to Lynne Harvey, Event Coordinator for Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior. These contributions will play a vital role in bringing comfort and support to those who have given so much to our country.

“This project is a wonderful example of how our school community is coming together to make a real difference in the lives of others,” said Kristin Polumbo, advisor to the Peer Advisory Club. “We are honored to be part of this initiative and to help make the holiday season a little brighter for our wounded service members.”
