Lawrence, New York (JANUARY 2023)—Before heading into their winter break, Lawrence Middle School seventh-grade students were visited by Wé McDonald, an author, singer, songwriter, and the third-place winner on the Voice in 2016.

Wé McDonald spoke to the students about her book, The Little Girl with the Big Voice, and her experience with bullying. The book, written in her own words, is the story of a teenage singer-songwriter who embraces her uniqueness and discovers her true voice despite what others might think or say.

Before the visit, the seventh-grade students received a copy of her book to read and discuss during their English class as part of their ongoing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. Students worked in groups to design posters that decorated the stage for the author. Students were encouraged to ask Wé McDonald questions about her experiences and also had the opportunity to share their messages of anti-bullying with Ms. McDonald.
