LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (SEPTEMBER 2024)—Lawrence School District honored Patriot Day with a series of poignant ceremonies across the district on September 11. Each year on the anniversary of this tragic day, events such as these bring the school community together to remember the lives lost and to celebrate the courage of first responders.
Dr. Ann Pedersen, Superintendent of Schools, expressed, “Our Patriot Day ceremonies are a vital part of the school district’s efforts to remember and honor the past while celebrating the spirit of resilience and unity.”
This year’s Patriots Day observances featured a heartfelt ceremony at each of the schools. The ceremony began with a retirement of the old flag, which had proudly flown over the school, and concluded with the raising of a new flag at half-staff. The somber yet uplifting ceremony included a special musical tribute: a performance of “Taps” in honor of the fallen and the school chorus’s stirring renditions of The Star Spangled Banner and “Wind Beneath My Wings,” both of which added a poignant touch to the day’s events.
