LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (FEBRUARY 2025)—Lawrence Middle School students recently participated in the KidWind competition at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. During the competition, 72 seventh- and- eighth-grade STEM students showcased their hard work, creativity, and scientific knowledge. The day marked a major milestone for the students who spent weeks preparing for the competition under the expert guidance of STEM teachers Mrs. Carloni, Mr. Deitch, Mrs. Ubertini, and Mr. Vasaturo.

In the weeks leading up to the competition, the students worked in teams researching wind energy and wind turbines. They applied the scientific method to experiment with various materials, sizes, angles, and shapes for their turbine blades, ultimately designing and building wind turbines capable of generating electricity. This hands-on project was an opportunity to enhance their understanding of renewable energy and demonstrate their teamwork, problem-solving skills, and dedication.

After school, many students spent additional hours conducting trials for their turbines and perfecting their presentation boards, ensuring they were ready to impress the judges. At the event, the students were evaluated on their knowledge of wind energy and the energy output produced by their turbines.

We are thrilled to announce the following students who received awards for their outstanding performances:

1st Place Winners: Rocket Turbine Team, Raechel Monzon Villanueva and Leah Santana (7th grade)

2nd Place Winner: Rotor Revolution, Liam Walker (7th grade)

3rd Place Winners: The Breezy Bros Team, Edelynne Reyes, Allisson Rivas Calix, and Anna Zeng (8th grade)

“We are incredibly proud of all of our students who participated in the competition. Their hard work and dedication represented Lawrence Middle School with pride. We look forward to future competitions and continued success in STEM education,” said Willis Perry, Principal of Lawrence Middle School.
