Lawrence Primary School Promotes Kindness and Empathy Skills

Lawrence Primary Students Created their own Mitten Tree and Donated Warm Winter Garments

LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (JANUARY, 2022)— Character development plays a major role in the educational experience of Lawrence Primary School students. To further promote kindness and empathy skills, Lawrence Primary School students created their own Mitten Tree.

“In our school, we take great pride in inspiring our students to be kind and empathetic inside and outside of the classroom,” said Ms. Kristen McLoughlin, Principal of Lawrence Primary School. “It was great to see our students actively participating in our school-wide activity and to see them giving back to our community.”

The Mitten Tree by Candance Christiansen was read aloud to the students. In the book, Sarah notices that a little boy at the bus stop does not have any mittens on and cannot participate in the winter fun. Sarah began knitting mittens for the boy and all the other children who did not have any mittens. Sarah would hang the mittens she made on a tree at their bus stop to find them. The story was a great reminder of how small acts of kindness can go a long way.

Students were able to decorate their own mittens to share with others. In addition, to share the importance of acts of kindness, the Lawrence Primary School collected brand new hats, gloves, and mittens for students who are in need of warm garments during this cold winter season.
